Live readaloud tonight!

Get in your jammies and set your clocks for 7:00 Central! Andrew will be on Facebook tonight to read the first chapters of the Wingfeather Saga. UPDATE: If you don't have a Facebook account, never fear. You can still listen in! Andrew will also be reading on YouTube. If you have an account at either platform, you can click the "get notifications" or "set reminder" button to be sure you don't miss it—but anyone is welcome regardless. :-)

Andrew will be reading nightly for a half hour each night—perfect for bedtime reading. If you miss a night or the live session doesn't work with your time zone/bedtime, each session will stay up for a day or two afterward.

Live readaloud with Andrew!

Since Andrew's tour was canceled and he, like the rest of us, is stuck at home, he's decided to spend his evenings reading to us. Yes! And he does the best voices, you guys. Tune in starting Friday on his Facebook page!

You can find your own copy of the books at any of these places, and you can join Andrew's readalong here. :-) (Tip: If you or a parent "like" his Facebook page, you should—I hope—get a notification when the readaloud is about to start. But you can also just show up a few minutes early and reload until he gets there.)

p.s. You know who else is doing live readalouds? Andrew's sister-in-law Jennifer Trafton, author extraordinaire and real-live fairy creature! Click here for more info.

Quarantine games

Wherever you are in this world, you have probably been hearing about coronavirus. I suspect you and your family have talked about whether you will self-isolate, or why people are anxious, or where you will find toilet paper. We've been thinking about these things, too. Andrew has decided to cut short his U.K. tour, and Professor Sidler and I have been working from home. Just in the last few days things seem to have gotten more serious, and so more people are making similar decisions.

Do you remember what Nia said after the Igiby three had their run-in with Slarb?

"Is it all right to go into town?"

Nia took her time flipping the eggs and bacon in the frying pan while they waited for an answer. "Not really, no. It's never safe for you to go into town, especially after what happened yesterday." Janner's shoulders slumped. "But we can't live in fear," Nia said. "We won't live in fear."

On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, chapter 15

Your family may have decided that it's not safe to go into town right now, maybe for your own safety, or maybe to help keep others safe. All the same, in our homes or in town, let's not live in fear. Instead, let's think about ways to love people and stay creative and connected. I have a few ideas, and then maybe you have some to share. :-)

  • We can write a story together. There's a group in the Flabbit Room doing that right now! They've been at it for a few months, actually. I don't think we can all comfortably fit in one thread, so if you like this idea, consider being a ringleader of a new story. You can also write stories with your family, no forum needed.
  • We can restart Friday Night Fights, or start another game in the forum.
  • You can also use the forum to start a new discussion: Talk about a hobby you enjoy, or the book you're currently reading. You can even start a book club!
  • We have lots of activities in our book club kids. You can find them under "Book Club Kits," above.
  • You can have virtual get-togethers with friends online. I like reading out loud over Skype or Facebook Live. Our family found some good games to play on Discord. Miss Linda likes playing online jigsaw puzzles. You can also find some free art classes online, and some museums are offering virtual tours. (Make sure you okay online activities with a parent.)
  • If you have young kiddos to help occupy, what about a puppet show, talent show, or a play you write and put on together? What about making your own play-doh?
  • If you are allowed to leave the house, you can check on an elderly family member or neighbor, to see if they need anything. Or you can start a neighborhood sing-a-long from your front porch, like some neighbors in Italy are doing!

What all are you guys doing to keep busy? What ideas can you think of to help love people right now?

Walking on Water: This week in the forum we're talking about chapter 8. See you there!

Happy release day!

Yesterday was the official release day of the first two books in hardcover! Have you gotten your copies yet? They are gorgeous. Nicholas Kole, Joe Sutphin, and Aeden Peterson did a wonderful job designing the cover, filling the books with new illustrations, and putting new beauty, horror, and style into the Creaturepedia sketches. We can't wait for you to get your hands on these books.

Also! Andrew's publishing team is extending the offer of the free map of Glipwood! Now you've got until next Tuesday to buy copies and sign up for your exclusive print. TELL YOUR FRIENDS.

RELEASE TOMORROW! (and a review)

Featherheads! Our brand-new, fully-illustrated, collectible hardcover editions are coming out TOMORROW. (Which means it is not too late to preorder and sign up for a free map!)

To celebrate, we have a review of On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness by one of our official launch team members, Semmie.

[W]hen the evil Fangs start coming after Janner’s family in search of the Jewels of Anniera, he cannot fathom why or how his family would know of the jewels’ whereabouts. And as Janner and his siblings keep getting into dangerous situations, he can’t understand why the jewels are worth risking his family’s lives for. ...

On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness is a fun, yet intense fantastical story filled with all sorts of twists and turns.

For the rest of the review, click here. Thank you, Semmie! For preorder links, and to find out how to get your own Glipwood map, click here.

Four characters: a review

Author and reviewer Emma Fox wrote up her favorite Wingfeather characters awhile ago. Here's what she had to say about Oskar:

Oskar’s shop is more than a bookstore. It’s a treasure-trove of wisdom and folklore; a reminder of the way life used to be in Aerwiar, before the Great War’s desolation.

Like one of Tolkein’s hobbits, Oskar’s simple, homely exterior conceals a brave and loyal heart.

Read her take on three other characters at her blog, here. And I'll echo her post's closing questions: Who are your favorite literary characters, from Wingfeather or elsewhere? What makes them stand out and come alive to you?

Andrew on tour: Andrew's got six shows around the U.S. over the next couple of weeks, and then he's off to the U.K.! Find out if he's coming near you via his music site.

An auteur interview

Earlier this month Andrew was invited to be a guest on the For the Church Podcast, hosted by author and professor Jared C. Wilson. They had a great conversation about creativity, the courage it takes to make new things, and how faith and art fit together.

"Most of the stuff I thought would really pay off didn't, and it was the moments of mercy that did."

Listen to the whole episode here.

From Andrew: "Six years ago today I printed up the final manuscript of the Wingfeather Saga."

What a HUGE thing.
